The Good Begins with You Eighth Charitable Competition announces the winners
17 April 2015
April 17, 2015, the National Forum „The Good Begins with You” took place at the House of the Teacher in Kiev. Winners of the 8th charitable competition for charitable projects by children and youth were selected and awarded during the event.
In 2014, the competition for charitable projects from children and youth was launched for the eighth time. The competition is run by “Ukraine 3000” Charitable Foundation, the University of Educational Management, the Association of Charities of Ukraine and the “Education of Ukraine” weekly newspaper.
Speaking of the history of the event, the organizers stress its role for Ukraine´s charitable sector: “When we first launched the event eight years ago, we had in mind to motivate children and young people to develop ideas for their own charitable causes. For young people, it takes a while to realize the importance of charity. For their teachers, it takes an effort to raise the awareness of honesty, humanity and generosity in the young people, but once aware of these values they will be aware of them for a lifetime. Besides, the competition is an important part in the process to re-establish the charitable traditions in Ukraine, long lost in the past”.
Among Ukrainian teachers and educators the competition is well-known and enjoys the reputation of a functional tool to educate values and morality in children and youth. Young people, too, readily take the challenge and willingly develop new ideas for charitable events. Since its launch in 2007, the competition supported the implementation of over 3,000 charitable projects and actions.
“The Good Begins with You” is a year round competition comprising several stages. Traditionally, the final events take place in Kiev within “The Good Begins with You” National Forum. At this stage, winners and laureates of the competition are selected in two nominations: children´s and young people´s teams. Entries from children´s teams include three categories: social, ecological and cultural projects. The winners (holders of the first, second and third places) as well as laureates (diploma holders) are then selected in all the four categories.
On July 15, 2014, „The Good Begins with You” All-Ukrainian Competition kicked off for the eighth time. The competition received 272 entries from all over the country. Projects and charitable actions implemented fully or partly during 2014, including long-term and permanent projects with stages coinciding to the competition time frame, were eligible for submission.
Before January 25, 2015, the competition participants submitted the results of their projects. The National Competition Commission then selected the finalists – 24 charitable projects in four nominations. Nine of these projects got “diplomas of encouragement” from the jury. The authors of the other fifteen projects were declared competition laureates and invited to Kiev to present and defend their ideas during the forum. This year, Maryna Antonova, Head of the Board of “Ukraine 3000”, Iryna Bielova, Director of the Irpin Specialized School ¹2 for depth study of economy and law, Oleksandr Maksymchuk, President of the Association of Charities of Ukraine and Maksym Korodenko, Editor in Chief of the “Education of Ukraine” weekly newspaper, served on the commission. As the final vote took place during the break, the forum´s guests remained intrigued till the last moment as to who will be the winner.
Taking on the tradition, the self-evaluation procedure was applied again this year. This method helps to ensure more transparent and objective competition results. Each competition finalist filled out a questionnaire to determine the best project in their nominations. Having listened to the presentations of their colleagues, they were able to evaluate their ideas. In this way, participating children and youth were placed in the shoes of the commission members. Their responses were then considered during the final evaluation.
The second part of the forum featured the most awaited event – the announcement of the winners and the awarding ceremony. Kateryna Yushchenko, Head of the Supervisory Board of “Ukraine 3000”, Maryna Antonova, Head of the Board of the Foundation, Oleksandr Maksymchuk, President of the Association of Charities of Ukraine, and Oleksandr Oliynyk, Head of the Department of the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministries, awarded the winners.
The winners got the prize of UAH 1,000 from the “Education of Ukraine” weekly newspaper, presented by the Editor in Chief Maksym Korodenko, while all the finalists received honorable diplomas.
Congratulations and best wishes to the winners!
