November 23, 2009, the United Nations Headquarters in New York hosted the presentation of the Raphael Lemkin: Soviet Genocide in Ukraine book, published by the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation as part of its History Lessons program.
Among the participants of the event were Permanent Representative of Ukraine at the UN, Ambassador Yuri Serheyev, Head of the Board of Directors of Ukraine 3000 Foundation Oleksandr Maksymchuk, Head of the History Lessons program Olesia Stasiuk, Director of the International Development Dept. at Ukraine 3000 Foundation Andriy Kotsiuba, Prof. Roman Serbyn, Nigel Colley, nephew of the renowned British journalist Gareth Jones, who had been making notes of the Holodomor during his trip of Ukraine, and representatives of the local community and Ukrainian diaspora.
The publication includes Lemkin’s address at the 1953 Ukrainian Famine commemoration in New York in its original English language version, as well as translations into 27 languages. The publication happened due to the cooperation between Ukraine 3000 Foundation, professor emeritus of Russian and East European history at the University of Quebec at Montreal Roman Serbyn, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
During the event, those present had a chance to view a photo exhibition dedicated to the Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, prepared by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.
The exhibition and presentation attracted much interest from representatives of UN member states’ diplomatic missions, UN Secretariat, New York political and public circles, and Ukrainian diaspora in the US.
