Killed by the Famine: Unknown Genocide of the Ukrainians Exhibition Presented at Recoleta Cultural Center, Buenos Aires
November 11, 2009, the Recoleta Cultural Center’s exhibition hall (Buenos Aires, Argentina) hosted the unveiling of the Killed by the Famine: Unknown Genocide of the Ukrainians exhibition created by Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation. The exhibition materials were translated by the Ukrainian Central Representation in the Republic of Argentina.
The event, organized by UCR and the Embassy of Ukraine to Argentina, was attended by parliament and government members, diplomats, representatives of mass media, Ukrainian NGOs, and numerous guests, including survivors of the Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine.
Among speakers at the ceremony were Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of Argentina Oleksandr Taranenko, Director General of Buenos Aires Government Claudio Avruch, and UCR head Yevhen Yuzva.
In his speech head of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in Argentina Mr. Taranenko thanked all representatives of central and provincial bodies of executive and legislative power which had been supporting Ukraine’s initiatives on commemorating Holodomor victims in the last years. The ambassador also expressed his hope that the decision on including Holodomor subject into the curriculum of Misiones Province schools, approved last year, would be supported on the national level.
Director General of Buenos Aires Government Claudio Avruch, in his turn, spoke about the importance of such events, promoting conscious attitude toward events like Holodomor and the sense of solidarity in the Argentinean community through revealing the truth about tragic historical events.
UCR head Yevhen Yuzva stressed upon the preparedness of the Ukrainian community in Argentina to work for reviving the historical truth and global recognition of Holodomor. He also invited all those present to take part in the Light a Candle commemorative action to be held by UCR and the Ukrainian embassy at the Buenos Aires Cathedral on November 21, 2009.
The Killed by the Famine: Unknown Genocide of the Ukrainians exhibition will be on display till November 22, 2009. The Ricoleta Center has around 5,000 visitors per day.
