Bohdan and Varvara Khanenkos Art Museum preserves the most important and systemic collection of classic foreign art in Ukraine, numbering over 20,000 items. The basis of the museum’s collection is formed by Ukrainian philanthropists Bohdan and Varvara Khanenkos’ private collection. In his will, signed in March 1917, Bohdan Khanenko donated his collection of rarities and works of art, gathered in the 40 years of his collecting work, his valuable library, and mansion to the city of Kyiv. The collector charged his wife Varvara with turning his house in Tersghchenkivska St. into a world art museum, opened for the public. According to the 1919 decree On Nationalizing Treasures of Art, the museum was given a state status.
In 1924, the names of the owners were obliterated from its name, it becoming the Museum of Eastern and Western Art. In 1999, the names of the founders reappeared in the name of the art treasury, putting the historical record straight.
