Museums and Museum Science International Seminar Held, Organized by Ukraine 3000 Foundation
December 15, 2008, the Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko Arts Museum hosted a one-day Museums and Museum Science international seminar, organized by the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation, Ukrainian Center for Museum Development, and French Cultural Center in Ukraine.
The organizers invited to Kyiv museum experts from France: Jannick Durand, collection curator at Louvres; Michel Rutcshkowski, Chief Curator at the National Museum Inspection of France, and Marie-Clarte O’Neill, Deputy Director of the National Institute of France’s Legacy. From the Ukrainian part, over 70 museum workers from Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Odesa, Kharkiv oblasts, the AR of the Crimea, and Kyiv.
The French guests told their Ukrainian colleagues about the present situation with museum business in France, museum system, new approaches to display and communication issues in Louvre, and modern trends in the work of museums of various types and profiles (state, municipal, and private). The role of a museum curator as a certain kind of manager was a special focus.
Ukrainian museum workers actively participated in the discussion, showing great interest to their French colleagues’ experience in various aspects of museum work, in part, staff training, combining research and teaching by curators, private collections, copyrights, legal issues, etc.
