First Lady honors Ukraine’s best museums

In Kyiv’s Arena Entertainment Club, Kateryna Yushchenko took part in an awards ceremony to honor Ukraine’s best museums.

Hosted by Ukraine 3000, NTCU (National Television Company of Ukraine) and the Ukrainian Center for Museum Development, this unique event was the first attempt to appreciate problems of our museums but also honor them for achievements.

In her speech, Mr. Yushchenko first wished all museum workers a happy Museum Day and then said: “Museums are the pride and beauty of any country and so both the state and society should preserve them. I want our charitable organizations, public institutions and citizens to develop Ukrainian museums.”

This year’s winners were selected by sixty-five experts among thirty-three museum events held in 2005. The first prize was given to the festival “The Third Millennium Museum,” which had been held last November in Dnipropetrovsk. The second prize went to the exhibition “The Ukrainian portrait of the 16th-17th centuries.” The Art Arsenal project, which had only recently been started, was awarded the third prize.

The awards were also presented to:

  • Borys Voznytsky, Director of the Lviv Art Gallery, Mykhailo Sykorsky, Director General of the Pereyaslov National and Ethnographic Preserve (Museum Personality)
  • The Andriy Sheptytsky National Museum, the Kharkiv Art Museum (Preservers of Museum Traditions).

The awards and prizes were presented by Kateryna Yushchenko, Vitaly Dokalenko, NTCU President, and Oleksiy Kopytko, “Yesterday” Project Coordinator/Ukraine 3000. Directors of Ukraine’s best museums attended the ceremony.
