First Lady speaks at Chornobyl conference
Kateryna Yushchenko, Head of the Supervisory Council of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation, spoke at today’s grand opening of an international conference “Twenty Years After Chornobyl Accident. Future Outlook.”
“We gathered here today to honor the beauty and endurance of our people. We admire their vitality which makes us hopeful to survive all tragedies and overcome all obstacles with the inner feeling of beauty,” she said in her speech.
“Today, scientists assure us that the impact of Chornobyl was not as devastating as we fearfully thought. We can only hope they are right, but hope and positive thinking are definitely not enough. Science should be morally courageous, but medicine should be straightforward and truthful however bitter that truth may be. We must not neglect witnesses and their complaints about health only because they undermine our statistics,” she added.
