Mrs Kateryna Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 Fund Representatives Visit the Volyn Oblast Children’s Territorial Medical Association
July 5, 2007, representatives of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund with Head of the Fund’s Supervisory Board visited the Volyn Oblast Children’s Territorial Medical Association. Among other participants of the event were Deputy Director of the National Amosov Cardiovascular Surgery Institute Vasyl Lazoryshynets, Director of the Hospital to Hospital Program Vira Pavliuk, Head of the Rivne Oblast State Administration Viktor Matchuk, First Deputy Head of the Oblast Council Valentyn Koroliuk, Rivne City Mayor Viktor Chayka, local authorities’ and Ukraine 3000 Fund representatives.
Accompanied by Chief Physician Hryhory Vashchylin, Mrs. Kateryna and Ukraine 3000 Fund representatives took a tour of the Volyn Oblast Children’s Clinical Hospital. They visited the Centralized Microbiology Unit, familiarizing themselves to innovative global technologies in diagnosing. The guests also visited the Neonatology Center, Newborn’s ICU, Medical Genetics, Immunology, and Genetic Biochemistry Lab, and were presented a project to create a Volyn Oblast Perinatal Center.
At the Children’s Consultative Clinics Mrs. Kateryna visited a display of little patients works.
Besides, the guests visited the Birth Defects Prevention Center. The Center was created to introduce the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Prevention Program founded by one of the world’s most famous genetics, Ukrainian American Volodymyr Verteletsky. The program is being carried out in Rivne and Volyn oblasts.
Kateryna Yushchenko had a brief meeting with doctors and medical stuff. Besides, the guests visited some wards, talking to little patients and their parents.
On behalf of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund, Mrs. Yushchenko gave the Volyn Oblast Children’s Territorial Medical Association an infant incubator and toys for the playrooms. The total value of the presents is over UAH 50,000. She also presented the Association with an Our Lady icon from the Yushchenko family.
Besides, Mrs. Kateryna said that by the end of the year the Association would obtain a new modern reanimobile in the value of UAH 600,000 due to the support of the Ukraine 3000 Fund. This has become possible due to an agreement between the Ukraine 3000 Fund and Korea-based CommeDefen Co.Ltd Company, allotting funds for the purchase.
The Volyn Oblast Children’s Territorial Medical Association, founded in 1997, includes the Volyn Oblast Children’s Hospital, oblast consultative outpatient clinics, and Dachny Resort for Children with Parents and Rehabilitation Center for Children with Lesions of the Nervous System and Physically Challenged Children. Total bed capacity of the hospital is 390, the resort – 100, and the oblast children’s consultative clinic can receive 300 patients per one shift. In total, 1027 persons work at the Association, 146 of them being doctors and 447 nurses and paramedics.
The hospital focuses on surgical corrections of birth defects in infants, mastering eye microsurgeries, diagnosing, and using laparoscopy. Early intervention and medical cum social rehabilitation methods are also being used on children with lesions of the nervous system. The hospital introduces new methods for neuro-physiological, cardiovascular, and ultrasonic examinations, along with immunological, microbiological, and genetic laboratory tests.
The Volyn Oblast Children’s Territorial Medical Association has an extensive experience in establishing international contacts. Thus, for fifteen years the hospital has been fruitfully cooperating with the Scandinavian Children’s Mission. In course of this cooperation it has received a considerable sum of donations. Children are being sent for health improvement to Sweden, Denmark, and Norway on an annual basis. With the support from the Mission, eight patients have undergone correction of especially complicated congenital malformations abroad. With the Support of the Children of Chornobyl International Foundation, the hospital has obtained medical equipment and apparatuses. For six years, the hospital has been actively cooperating with the Ukrainian-Swiss Fund to Improve Perinatal Care in Ukraine. The hospital also takes part in the Ukrainian-American Children of Chornobyl Relief Program and Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Prevention Program (since 1999).
The Association is member of the Ukraine 3000 Fund’s Hospital to Hospital Program. During 2005-2007 within the framework of this program the hospital has received medical equipment, medicine, toys and books for the playrooms with total costs around UAH 160,000. Besides, due to the Fund’s support, the hospital has received infant incubators with costs of UAH 31,000 each, an IC newborns’ set (up to UAH 71,000), and mechanical scales (around UAH 4,000). The purchase of the infant incubators has become possible due to Oleksandr Ponomariov’s beneficial ball held November 20, 2005. With the funds raised in course of the ball, incubators were purchased and delivered to four Hospital to Hospital program member hospitals. Volyn doctors have also undergone training at the Hamburg European Surgical Institute and participate in the Doctors Network international conferences on a regular basis.
Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 Fund representatives are on a one-day working trip to Western Ukraine. Earlier they have visited the Rivne Oblast Children’s Clinical Hospital.
