First Lady meets Mike Leavitt
Kateryna Yushchenko met with Mike Leavitt, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.
She thanked him and the U.S. government for supporting health care and medical education in Ukraine and helping our country fight HIV/AIDS, TB, bird flu and tackle the aftereffects of the Chornobyl disaster.
Mrs. Yushchenko and Mr. Leavitt discussed projects implemented by Ukraine 3000 and supported by NGOs and governmental agencies of the United States. The First Lady then spoke about the most important project of her foundation to build a medical center in Kyiv.
The President’s wife said all these projects were only the beginning of long-term partnership and cooperation between Ukraine and the United States in the area of health care.
Ukraine’s Health Minister Yuriy Polyachenko, representatives of the U.S. Office of Health and Human Services and other medical institutions of America attended the meeting.
Mr. Leavitt and Mr. Polyachenko signed a cooperation agreement.
Kateryna Yushchenko is now visiting the United States of America (Washington, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angeles) to raise funds for building a Center for Maternal and Child Health in Kyiv.
