“Everybody in this audience shares a secret: doing good things brings one tremendous satisfaction,” Mrs. Yushchenko said in her speech. She believes that helping others is a part of Ukraine’s history and culture, “a part of our roots.” “Charity had been almost completely destroyed in the Soviet era, when denouncing one’s neighbors was encouraged instead of helping them, but today it is going through a swift process of revival,” she said.

Before announcing the winners of the Philanthropist 2010 National Competition, Mr. Letenko introduced those who had assessed this year’s application. Recall that every year the jury is convoked of the experts on social development and charity, answering the criteria and possessing necessary experience for selecting the best examples of charity. The names of the jury are kept secret till the end of the assessment process.

The cooperation between Ukraine 3000 Foundation and Evpatoriya Central Children’s Clinical Resort at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine began in 2006. In part, the resort was a winner of the second grant competition for facilities servicing children with cerebral palsy as part of the Joy of the Childhood – Free Movement program. In 2009 the resort’s head Anatoliy Nenko received the Ukraine 3000 Foundation’s award, For Outstanding Achievements in Children’s Health Care.

The We Care social photography and video all-Ukrainian youth media competition was organized by Friends of the Children Charitable Foundation. Thirty youth and public organizations and services from cities and towns in 11 Ukraine’s oblasts took part in the competition, 7 of them being boarding schools. The total of 182 photos and over 25 video clips was applied to the competition, with around 100 young people being their individual and collective authors.

On that day in Kyiv representatives of political parties and public organizations, youth movements, the Congress of National Communities – at least 5,000 people all-in-all, - went on a march from Arsenalna Sq. to the National Holodomor Memorial, where heads of various churches celebrated a memorial service. People coming to the Memorial brought with them not just candles but also apples and wheat ears to place on the monument to the children of Holodomor.
