May 12, 2010, InterMediaConsulting hosted a press conference dedicated to the Kyiv premiere of a Chernivtsi Olha Kobylianska Oblast Academic Ukrainian Theater show, Longing for the Future. The event was organized with the help and financial support from the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation.
Among the participants of the press conference were Kateryna Yushchenko, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation; Vira Kytayhorodska, author of the verses on which the show script is based; Liudmyla Skrypka, art director of the theater, production director, scriptwriter, Meritorious Artiste of Ukraine; Oksana Ivasiuk, literary scholar.
Longing for the Future is a meditation on the theme of Vira Kytayhorodska’s poem narrating a story of a common Ukrainian woman, who went to Italy in search of work, leaving behind her husband and son. Virtually any resident of Bukovyna and, more widely, Western Ukraine can relate to this story, since there are migrant workers almost in every family. The show combines smoothly recollections of the past and the present life of Ukrainians and presents a detailed picture of Bukovyna everyday life.
“This is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen,” Mrs. Yiushchenko said, addressing the audience. “It broaches upon issues important for Ukraine and explores very profound subjects.”
Mrs. Kateryna thanked Vira Kytayhorodska, Liudmyla Skrypka and the whole team of the Chernivtsi Olha Kobylianska Oblast Academic Ukrainian Theater. She recalled that she had seen three of their plays: Sweet Darusia, based on Maria Matios novella, Longing for the Future, and, recently, The Reedpipe Tale. “Your shows are very progressive and creative, making one think. For me the Kobylianska Theater isn’t a provincial one. You are the vanguard of the Ukrainian theater arts. I’d like you to tour the capital more often,” she said.
“Out of several poetry collections I gave director Liudmyla Skrypka, she chose the social poetry,” poet Vira Kytayhorodska said. “I never interfered into the production process and had seen the result only at the premiere. It was a great success in Chernivtsi. I wonder how the Kyiv audience will take it.”
Ms. Skrypka recalled that in 2008 Sweet Darusia was performed in Kyiv with the support of Ukraine 3000 Foundation. “Before that, our theater hadn’t toured the capital for twenty years,” she said. “I believe the fact that Kyiv theater lovers will be able to see our work a great is a great victory. We tried to be honest and sincere, and I believe we were able to do it.”
Literary scholar and public figure Oksana Ivasiuk spoke in more detail about Kytayhorodska’s works (incidentally, the latter took part in the creation of the Red Book of Ukrainian Poetry, published in 2009 with the support of Ukraine 3000 Foundation). She also touched upon the subject of labor migration and its coverage in the modern Ukrainian literature.
The Kyiv premiere of Longing for the Future, timed to coincide with the International Mother’s Day, will be performed May 14 at the Kyiv National Academic Operetta Theater. Its major goal is drawing public attention to the problem of labor migration of the Ukrainians.
