
Kateryna Yushchenko Visits Father Mykhaylo Zhar’s Family Type Children’s Home

June 18, 2009, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko, being on a working trip to Chernivtsi oblast, visited a family type children’s home run by prior of St. Ascension Monastery Father Mykhaylo Zhar.
At present, 220 children, adopted by or in trusteeship of Father Mykhaylo, live at this children’s town in Molnytsia village, Hertsayiv district. 39 of them are HIV-positive, around 100 – physically or mentally disabled. 90 St. Ascension Monastery monks and 130 Boyany Convent nuns help to take care of the children.
Mrs. Yushchenko toured the town’s grounds, visiting the unit for HIV-positive children, where kids aged from 1 to 7 live. These children require permanent medical observation, thus, a children’s branch of the oblast AIDS prevention and fight center was opened at this unit.
Mrs. Kateryna also visited boys’ and girls’ wings, the dining hall, and conference hall. She talked to the children, monks, and nuns. The children gave a small concert in honor of their guest.
On behalf of Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation, Mrs. Yushchenko presented the children with creativity kits, books, toys, and various sports equipment. Among other participants of the event were Head of Chernivtsi Oblast State Administration Volodymyr Kulish, Head of Chernivtsi Oblast Council Ivan Shylepnytsky, First Deputy Head of Oblast State Administration Viktor Pavliuk, Head of the Board of Directors of Ukraine 3000 Foundation Oleksandr Maksymchuk, Head of the Children’s Bureau at Oblast State Administration Yuliya Yakivchek, Head Physician of Chernivtsi Oblast AIDS Prevention and Fight Center Yuri Lesiuk.
Father Mykhaylo Zhar first adopted children in 1992. Since then he has been admitting to his children’s house children with serious diseases or abandoned by their parents from throughout Ukraine, becoming their legal guardian. In 2008 Father Mykhailo was conferred the title of Hero of Ukraine. Today, June 18, Father Mykhaylo came to Kyiv, where he will receive an award from the Ministry of Health Care, the St. Panteleymon the Healer award pin, on the occasion of the Day of Medical Workers.
Mrs. Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 Foundation members are on a one-day working trip to Chernivtsi oblast. Earlier they visited Chernivtsi Oblast Medical and Social Rehabilitation Center for Children with Organic Lesions of Nervous System.
