Kateryna Yushchenko Visits Zhytomyr Penitentiary No.8

May 19, 2009, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko visited Zhytomyr Penitentiary No.8 and the secure bloc where juvenile delinquents serve their terms. Among other participants of the event were Head of the ZhytomyrOSA Yuri Zabela, Head of the Oblast Council Vitaly Frantsuz, President of the Friends of the Children Charitable Foundation Maryna Krysa, Deputy Head of the State Penitentiary Department of Ukraine Natalia Kalashnil, and Head of the State Penitentiary Department of Ukraine’s Zhytomyr administration Serhiy Sysoyev.
The State Penitentiary Department officials retold to Mrs. Yushchenko the history of the institution, functioning as a jail since 1914. They also described its current situation, in part, regarding juvenile delinquents and their incarceration conditions.
Mrs. Yushchenko visited a class where the detained teenagers study. Together with Ms. Krysa, she presented to them the Books for Children project. The ladies talked to the teenagers and presented to them books and candy.
This was the final event of a working trip by Mrs. Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 Foundation members to Zhytomyr oblast. They also visited the Zhytomyr Oblast Children’s Hospital and Zhytomyr Boarding School for Deaf Children. Mrs. Kateryna also attended the St. Michael’s Cathedral. The Ukraine 3000 Foundation members also took a tour to Yosyp Bukhanchuk Fine Arts Museum.
