
Kateryna Yushchenko Visits Kyiv Special Boarding School No.5 for Blind Children

November 11, 2008, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko visited Kyiv Batiuk Special Boarding School No.5 for Blind Children. Also present were Head Ophthalmologist with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Serhiy Rykov, high management of the Provincial Rhineland Alliance, headed with Director Harry K. Voigtsberger, and Ukraine 3000 Foundation members.
The visit to the boarding school had as its goal studying the institution’s problems and seeking ways for cooperation and support.
The guests toured the library, psychological relief rooms, workshops, and mess room, visited bedrooms and junior school rooms, the computer class and typhlo room. They also talked to the students, management, and faculty members of the boarding school.
Mrs. Yushchenko thanked the German party for their interest in the problems related to education and socialization of children with impaired vision. She also gave a special notice to the boarding school’s activities, whose management does so much to improve the children’s living conditions, the quality of education and professional training. “For our Foundation, integration of people with limited abilities into the society is a very important issue, Mrs. Yushchenko said. “We know that much work remains to be done in this area and many issues are still to be solved. First of all, we want these children to have more vocational choices. It is also important that we work with our society to change the attitude toward people with special needs.” Mrs. Yushchenko stressed upon the importance of studying Germany’s experience in the socialization of people with limited abilities and further implementation of their best attainments in our country.
On behalf of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation, Mrs. Yushchenko presented to the Special Boarding School No.5 a collection of fairy tales and music on audio CDs for their library.
Kyiv Batiuk Special Boarding School No.5 for Blind Children offers education, harmonious development, adaptation, and rehabilitation for children with impaired vision. The school admits children from 6-7 years of age, living in Kyiv and adjusting regions, with 0–0.04 visual acuity. The complete course of education at the school is 12 years. Its pupils are trained as massotherapists or typesetting operators. A musical school is operating at the institution.
The Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation and Provincial Rhineland Alliance signed a memorandum on cooperation November 10, 2008. Their first joint project was unveiling the Rift through Life exhibition of witness accounts by Ukrainian female forced workers from Rhineland.
