
Kateryna Yushchenko Opens the Days of Ukrainian Cinema in Poland

November 7, 2008, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko opened the Days of Ukrainian Cinema in Poland. The festival was organized by Ukraine 3000 Foundation, Ukrainian Film Foundation, and Nemiroff Company together with Polish Film Institute and Pomeranian Film Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine.
The ceremony took place at the Palace of Science and Culture in Warsaw, attended by Poland’s Minister of Culture Bogdan Zdrojewski, Head of the Polish Film Institute Agnieszka Odorowicz, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Poland Oleksandr Motsyk, Director of the Ukrainian Film Foundation Andriy Khalpakhchi, renowned Ukrainian and Polish film directors (Andrzej Wajda, Roman Balayan, et. al.), representatives of the diplomatic corps in Poland, and Ukraine 3000 Foundation members.
In her speech Mrs. Yushchenko thanked the Days of Ukrainian Cinema in Poland organizers and expressed her hope that this cooperation would continue. In her words, such cultural events are graphic evidence of the good neighborly relations, uniting Ukraine and Poland along with their joint projects in many areas of public life.
Mrs. Kateryna also presented Ukraine 3000 Foundation’s programs and projects to support Ukrainian film industry.
Mrs. Yushchenko thanked the Nemiroff Company, rendering support to Ukrainian cinema for many years.
The ceremony ended with a presentation of Roman Balayan’s new film, The Birds of Paradise.
The Days of Ukrainian Cinema in Poland will be held November 7-16 in Warsaw, Krakow, and Gdansk. The festival program features Roman Balayan’s Birds of Paradise (2008) and Lone Wolf (1975), Kira Muratova’s Two-in-One (2007) and Brief Encounters (1967). Additionally, the Polish audience will have a chance to see contemporary Ukrainian films: Archbishop Andriy by Oles Yanchuk, Illusion of Fear by Oleksandr Kiriyenko, and Robert Crombie’s Sappho, bringing over $1,000,000 in box office revenues in Ukraine.
The project was launched in April 2008 with the Polish Film Festival in Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, and Odesa, featuring the premiere of Andrzej Wajda’s Katyn. The festivals are planned to become an annual event, aimed at promoting Ukrainian film distribution in Poland and Polish – in Ukraine, along with encouraging co-production by the two countries’ filmmakers.
Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 Foundation members are staying in Warsaw for a working visit for opening the Days of Ukrainian Cinema in Poland.
November 6, Mrs. Kateryna visited the unveiling of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine documents exhibition, attended a reception dedicated to the University of Warsaw Ukrainian Studies Chair’s international scholarly conference, and met with film director Andrzej Wajda.
November 7, Mrs. Yushchenko visited the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 and met with wife of the President of Poland Maria Kaczynska, and Director General of the International Beethoven Festival Elżbieta Penderecka.
