July 8, 2008, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko visited the Federal Institute for the Education of the Blind in Vienna. Mrs. Kateryna was accompanied by wife of the President of Austria Margit Fischer and wife of Ukraine’s Permanent Representative at the international organizations in Vienna Iryna Yelchenko.

Mrs. Kateryna toured the Institute, talked to the students, professors, and management. She visited the kindergarten and nursery operating at the Institute’s premises and the boarding school for blind children.

The Federal Institute for the Education of the Blind was founded by Johann Wilhelm Klein in 1804. It counts up to 150 students and almost as many first-class specialists. The Institute covers the whole range of educational services: fro, kindergarten and secondary school to vocational training in certain professions (telecommunications, making furniture, baskets, and other goods, massotherapy, trainings for people who have lost sight as adults). The students also receive musical education. A boarding school is operating on the Institute’s premises.

The Institute’s printing shop provides textbooks for all Austrian schools for people who are blind or visually impaired. They also produce other educational materials for the blind: from short newspaper bulletins to fiction. There is a museum at the Institute, also founded by Klein in  1837, which boasts over 3,000 of exhibit items.

Kateryna Yushchenko is accompanying her husband, President Viktor Yushchenko, on a two-day official visit to Austria. Earlier Mrs. Yushchenko and Mrs. Fischer have visited Vienna’s places of interest.
