In course of the meeting, Dr. Novick described to Mrs. Yushchenko the Ukrainian Initiative program, a joint action by the Chernobyl Children's Project International and the International Children’s Heart Foundation. Within this program’s framework, an American professionals’ team renders surgical and diagnostic aid to Ukrainian children with cardiac malformations. The first stage of this program was a visit to the General and Emergency Surgery Institute in Kharkiv, where American doctors had been performing surgeries and trainings for their Ukrainian colleagues for two weeks.
Mrs. Yushchenko gave a high appraisal to this initiative, voicing her support to the charitable organizations’ actions.
The parties also discussed ways of cooperation within the Hospital to Hospital program.
William Novick is the founder and medical director of the International Children’s Heart Foundation. The organization’s major goal is improving patient care system for children in the developing countries. Owing to the Foundation, around 2,000 children with congenital heart diseases in 17 countries have undergone surgeries. The Chornobyl Heart film was shot in Belarus, dedicated to Dr. Novick’s activities.
The Ukrainian Initiative program is scheduled for five years. A volunteer surgical team will tour the Ukrainian hospitals, performing surgeries and holding training courses for the local staff. This format has been tested in Belarus several years ago, and its organizers hope to succeed in Ukraine, too. The program is aimed at raising the skills of children’s cardio surgeons and cardiologists in Ukraine and familiarizing them with the latest achievements in children’s cardio surgery. American professionals together with their Ukrainian colleagues will perform surgeries, diagnostics, post- and pre-surgical care, and hold trainings.
The American team includes a children’s cardiovascular surgeon, children’s cardiologist, children’s anesthesiologist, children’s intensive care specialist, children’s nurses, children’s perfusiologist, and children’s respiratory specialist. At the present stage, the program envisages visits to the General and Emergency Surgery Institute (Kharkiv), General and Reconstructive Surgery Institute (Donetsk), Odesa Oblast Children’s Hospital, and Amosov Cardiovascular Surgery Institute at the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.
