
Wives of the Presidents of Ukraine and the USA Take Part in a Round Table on Fight against Breast Cancer

April 1, 2008, wife of the President of Ukraine, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko and wife of the President of the United States Laura Bush took part in a round table on the fight against breast cancer. Among other participants of the event, hosted by the Diplomatic Academy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, were members of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization, other Ukrainian and American organizations dealing with breast cancer fight, and women who have overcome this disease.
Addressing the audience, Mrs. Bush described the changes in diagnosing and treating breast cancer in US in the last 25 years. She also spoke in detail about the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. This NGO aims its efforts on increasing women’s awareness about breast cancel throughout the world: prevention, regular medical examinations, early pathology detection, psychological support, post-treatment rehabilitation, etc.
Mrs. Yushchenko placed emphasis on the importance of early breast cancer diagnostic. She added that the Ukraine 3000 Foundation would consider joining an information campaign aimed at fighting this disease in Ukraine.
Other participants of the round table spoke about their personal experience or that of their organizations in fighting breast cancer.
Mrs. Laura Bush is accompanying her husband, President George Bush of the United States, on his state visit to Ukraine. Earlier she had a meeting with Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko. The first ladies also visited the Taras Shevchenko National Museum and the Peace Corps Headquarters in Ukraine.
