
Kateryna Yushchenko and Laura Bush Visit the Peace Corps Headquarters in Ukraine

April 1, 2008, wife of the President of Ukraine, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko and wife of the President of the United States Laura Bush visited in Kyiv the Peace Corps Headquarters in Ukraine.
Mrs. Yushchenko and Mrs. Bush met with Country Director Mrs. Diane Schmidt, who described for them her organization’s activities in Ukraine, its major programs and attainments.
The Ukrainian and US first ladies took a tour of the Peace Corps headquarters and talked to the volunteers working in Ukraine at present. The latter presented to the distinguished guests two projected in the area of the cultural legacy preservation to be launched in Khmelnytsky oblast and the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea.
Among other participants of the event were Director of the Ukraine 3000 Foundation Medical Programs Department Vira Pavliuk, Head of the Public Relations Department Maryna Antonova, and wife of the Ambassador of the USA to Ukraine Dr. Deborah Taylor.
The Peace Corpse Program in Ukraine employs over 300 volunteers, which is the biggest number in 75 countries. During the last 13 years, 1800 volunteers have served in Ukraine, working mostly at schools and NGOs. The Peace Corps volunteers are working in 217 cities and villages in all Ukraine’s oblasts. The Peace Corpse in Ukraine carries out, in part, projects on community economic development, teaching English as foreign language, and youth outreach.
Mrs. Laura Bush is accompanying her husband, President George Bush of the United States, on his state visit to Ukraine. Earlier she had a meeting with Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko. The first ladies also visited the Taras Shevchenko National Museum.
