
Kateryna Yushchenko Meets with Eunice Kennedy Shriver

February 21, 2008, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund Kateryna Yushchenko met in Washington with Founder and Honorary Chairperson of the Special Olympics charitable organization Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Chairman and CEO of Special Olympics International Timothy Shriver. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States Oleh Shamshur also took part in this meeting.
Mrs. Yushchenko spoke about the Special Olympics movement in Ukraine, embracing 17 of 25 Ukraine’s oblasts and participated by 14,000 mentally retarded people. Mrs. Kateryna also shared the pans for future cooperation between the Ukraine 3000 Fund and Ukraine’s Special Olympics.
In her turn, Mrs. Kennedy Shriver spoke about the changes in the public attitude towards mentally retarded in the United States, which had happened thanks in no small part to the Special Olympics. Mr. Shriver spoke about the preparations for the winter Special Olympics to be held in 2009 in Ohio, USA.
Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics for mentally retarded in 1968. Today the Special Olympics have become a global movement, involving over 2.5 million athletes in over 165 countries.
The Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund made a decision to support the Special Olympics movement in Ukraine. The decision was made public September 28, 2007. Mrs. Yushchenko supported the Ukrainian athletes at the Shanghai Special Olympics where they won 8 golden medals, 12 silver, and 5 bronze.
Kateryna Yushchenko and the Ukraine 3000 Fund representatives are staying in the United States for a working visit. February 19 they met with President and CEO of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions Lawrence McAndrews and US Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt. Mrs. Yushchenko also attended the memorial service for Lev Dobriansky, met with Georgetown University President Dr. John DeGioia and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America leaders and Ukrainian community representatives. Also February 19, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Children's Hospital of the Future Charitable Fund Vira Pavliuk visited the Emory University of Atlanta School of Medicine.
February 20, Mrs. Yushchenko met with National Geographic Society representatives and took part in a meeting between representatives of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund, Ministry for Healthcare of Ukraine, and the Emory University of Atlanta School of Medicine. Also, Mrs. Kateryna met with renowned American children’s cardio surgeon William Novick. Besides, Mrs. Yushchenko unveiled in Washington the Execution by Hunger: Unknown Genocide of the Ukrainians exhibition.
