
Kateryna Yushchenko Meets with National Geographic Society Members

February 20, 2008, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund Kateryna Yushchenko met with Prof. Robert Ballard, director of the University of Rhode Island's School of Archeological Oceanography, president of the Sea Research Foundation's Institute for Exploration, and research fellow with the National Geographic Society. Among other participants of the meeting, hosted by the National Geographic Society, were President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Geographic Society John Fahey, Executive Vice President Terry Garcia, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States Oleh Shamshur.
Prof. Ballard spoke about the research programs at the Black Sea, aimed at seeking the sea bottom for items of historical value, and the plans to create an undersea museum, which the Black Sea is due to its unique conditions for sunken objects preservation.
National Geographic Society members present at the meeting discussed with Mrs. Yushchenko the possibility for publishing the National Geographic magazine in Ukraine and creating a Ukrainian National Geographic Channel.
Prof. Ballard is famous for his research of the Titanic and battleship Bismarck. For a number of years he has been researching the Black Sea together with Director of the Undersea Heritage Dept. at the Archeology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Serhiy Voronov within the framework of the cooperation between the Undersea Heritage Dept. and the University of Rhode Island's School of Archeological Oceanography. This cooperation envisages using for undersea research in the Black Sea waters modern equipment provided by the American party, as well as involving foreign archeologists in this research. In August 2007, President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko and Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko familiarized themselves with the work of the Byzantium 2007 deep water archeological expedition taking place August 10-21 in the Black Sea waters near Khersones.
Mrs. Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 Fund representatives are staying in the United States for a working visit. Earlier they met with President and CEO of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions Lawrence McAndrews and US Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt. Mrs. Yushchenko also attended the memorial service for Lev Dobriansky and met with Georgetown University President Dr. John DeGioia and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America leaders and Ukrainian community representatives. Also, Head of the Board of Directors of the Children's Hospital of the Future Charitable Fund Vira Pavliuk visited the Emory University of Atlanta School of Medicine.
