
Kateryna Yushchenko Meets with Michael Leavitt

February 19, 2008, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund Kateryna Yushchenko met in Washington with US Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt. Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister of Healthcare of Ukraine Vasyl Lazoryshynets, Head of the Board of Directors of the Children's Hospital of the Future Charitable Fund Vira Pavliuk, Oleh Shamshur, Advisor to the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Ruslan Nimchynsky, and representatives of the US Ministry for Health and Human Services and Ukraine 3000 Fund.
Mrs. Yushchenko spoke about the Ukraine 3000 Fund medical projects and programs, in part, the Children's Hospital of the Future project. In part, she emphasized that the committee of the comtest to select Designer General for the project was headed by Sanford M. Melzer, Senior Vice President for Strategic Planning at the Seattle Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Kateryna also described other Fund’s medical projects in which American medical institutions take part, namely, the cooperation with the Miami University and Orlando clinics which in fall 2007 made prosthetics for Ukrainian children, and about training for doctors. It is planned that another group of children will soon be sent to the US for prosthetics.
Besides, Mrs. Kateryna spoke about the cooperation between Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund and American companies, in part, the McDonalds. Speaking about the attainments of the Hospital to Hospital program, Mrs. Yushchenko said she was happy about the partnerships between Ukrainian hospitals and their counterparts in Texas, California, Florida, etc.
In her turn, Mrs. Pavliuk emphasized the importance of training programs for Ukrainian doctors, especially for oncologists and onco-hematologists.
Mr. Lazoryshynets desribed the experience of cooperation between Ukrainian and American doctors. He thanked the American party for their support to Ukrainian medicine and expressed his hope that the current joint projects would continue. He also spoke about the major priorities of Ukraine’s Healthcare Ministry: introducing insurance medicine, the institute of family doctors, and trainings for Ukrainian doctors.
Messrs. Leavitt and Lazoryshynets exchanged information on cooperation between their ministries and implementing joint programs to prevent and fight HIV/AIDS and bird flew, as well as educational programs for Ukrainian doctors.
Summarizing the meeting, Mrs. Kateryna said that at her first meeting with Mr. Leavitt they discussed creating a partnership network between Ukraine and the US, and that she was glad to see this partnership developing and working.
Mrs. Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 Fund representatives are staying in the United States for a working visit. Earlier they met with President and CEO of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions Lawrence McAndrews.
