
Kateryna Yushchenko Meets with Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick

February 12, 2008, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund Kateryna Yushchenko met with Director of the Berlin International Film Festival Dieter Kosslick. Among other participants of the meeting were Ukraine’s Minister for Culture Vasyl Vovkun, Director of the Ukrainian Cinema Foundation Andriy Khalpakhchi, and Ukraine 3000 Fund representatives.
The parties discussed Ukraine’s participation in the Berlin International Film Festival and exchanged their experience in involving non-state funds into supporting national cinema. Mr. Kosslick told Mrs. Yushchenko about Berlin Festival programs aimed at involving the young. For instance, since 2003 the festival features a Talents on Berlinale section, aimed at promoting young promising script writers, directors, and actors from various countries. The winners of the selection get a chance to attend workshops and trainings, as well as implement their own projects.
Mrs. Kateryna also took interest in the Children’s Film Festival held within the Berlinale framework.
The Berlin International Film Festival, a.k.a. Berlinale, has been held annually since 1951, in February in Berlin. It is one of the Europe’s and world’s most influential, along with the Cannes and Venice festivals, and attracts the biggest number of visitors. The Festival’s awards are the Golden and Silver Bears (a bear being Berlin’s symbol). The panel always emphasizes that the festival has to feature films from all countries.
The 58th Berlin International Film Festival is held from February 7 to 17. The program includes 26 films, 18 of which are premiered at the festival. Five films are presented hours concours, with another 21 competing for the Golden and Silver Bears. In total, 380 films from 59 countries will be presented in various Berlinale programs. Jury President is Konstantin Costa-Gavras, Greece-based film director.
Mrs. Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund members are on a working trip to Berlin, taking part in the events of the 58th Berlin International Film Festival. February 11 they took part in the Cinema for Peace reception, and February 12 visited the European Film Market and met with the Cannes Film Festival leaders and director of the International Federation of Film Producers.
