Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund Kateryna Yushchenko took part in the Facts of the Week with Oksana Sokolova show on ICTV Channel at 6:45 p.m. January 27, 2008, being interviewed by the show’s anchor Oksana Sokolova.
The major topic for discussion was the Davos Philanthropic Roundtable at the World Economic Forum in Davos, in which Mrs. Yushchenko has taken part. Recall that among other participants were President of the Aspen Institute Walter Isaacson (moderator), renowned financier and philanthropist George Soros, President of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Global Health Tadataka Yamada, Managing Director of the Clinton Global Initiative Robert Harrison, and American business editor of The Economist Matthew Bishop. The roundtable discussed the effectiveness of the philanthropy, the situation with charity and philanthropy in the developing countries, interaction of charitable organizations with the state, media, and business. The event was organized by the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation.
Speaking about the roundtable, Mrs. Kateryna remarked that recently the world leaders coming to Davos had been placing more emphasis on global and social problems in addition to economic and political issues. She expressed her satisfaction with the fact that philanthropy issues had been discussed on such high a level, giving much attention to Ukraine. Mrs. Yushchenko also said that the roundtable broached the subject of the most effective philanthropy mechanism for Ukraine, which would allow to “revive old traditions in charity, simultaneously accepting the best global experience.”
Being asked about Bill Gates’s decision to retire and devote himself to philanthropy, Mrs. Yushchenko said this was a great initiative, the more important that it came from a person who had achieved so much in business and is able to transfer this successful experience into charitable activities. She also said that any charitable initiatives should be carried out in a transparent manner, adding that this was becoming a standard practice in Ukraine.
Mrs. Yushchenko described the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund’s biggest project, creating the All-Ukrainian Center to Protect Mothers’ and Children’s Health, a.k.a. Children’s Hospital of the Future. She said that the project was currently going through the coordination stage, recalling the competition to select Designer General taking part in May0July 2007. The designer is to present the final design of the hospital in the near future. Mrs. Kateryna added that simultaneously steps were being made to provide the hospital with equipment: negotiations were underway with producers and providers of the most complicated, so-called heavy medical equipment.
