
Kateryna Yushchenko Takes part in Finishing the Rushnyk of National Unity Ceremony

January 21, 2008, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund Kateryna Yushchenko took place in the ceremony of putting finishing stitches on the National Unity Rushnyk (embroidered towel) at the former Bread Chamber of the St. Sophia of Kyiv National Preserve. The action was initiated by the Mass Media Workers’ Association of Ukraine and the National Guild of Folk Arts Masters.
Mrs. Yushchenko together with Kyiv stitchers finished the 9 m long design which had been created by folk artists from all Ukraine’s regions for a whole year.
Addressing the audience, Mrs. Yushchenko said she was deeply impressed by this project’s history and the response it evoked in Ukraine. “This is another proof that we are a single country and a single nation,” Mrs. Kateryna said. “We share common history and culture, common past we are reviving, and common future we are creating.” Mrs. Yushchenko thanked all the project’s participants for their talent and devotion. She expressed her hope that the next similar action will be initiated by the Ukrainians abroad.
The all-Ukrainian civic political action on creation this embroidered artwork had lasted for a year, during which the rushnyk was traveling of Ukraine’s regions. The folk artists were stitching on it patterns characteristic for their region. At present the rushnyk has on it 27 original patterns, answering the present administrative division of Ukraine, which are combined into a single Tree of Life design.
The rushnyk is scheduled to be handed over to President Viktor Yushchenko on the Day of Unity, January 22.
