Kateryna Yushchenko Takes Part in the Ceremony of Donating Computer Tomograph to the AMSU Oncology Institute

05 April 2007 15:33

April 5, 2007, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 Charitable Fund Kateryna Yushchenko took part in the ceremony of donating a computer tomograph to the Oncology Institute of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Volodymyr Ohryzko, Director of the Oncology Institute of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine Serhiy Shalimov, and Head of the Children's Department of the Oncology Institute of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine Hryhoriy Klymniuk also took part in the event.

Equipping the Institute with the tomograph has become possible due to a charitable action held in 2005 in Germany, initiated by the Ukraine 3000 Fund and organized by the Passauer Neue Presse Agency and Fund to Further UNESCO Education for Children Requiring Help program. Its organizers had announced that the raised funds would be channeled to support Ukrainian children. In course of the action, driving the attention of a great number of Germans, over € 630,000 had been raised. A decision was made to donate this money to the Children's Department of the Oncology Institute of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Burns Center at the Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 2, and Ancestral Home Center for Homeless Children.

Addressing the audience, Mrs. Yushchenko spoke about the Ukraine 3000 Fund's experience of cooperation with the Oncology Institute of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. She said that this cooperation was “a graphic example of how fruitful and effective a cooperation between international organizations, socially responsible business, and charitable funds can be. (...) Together with our partners we are successfully implementing our Fund's mission, Do Good and Involve Others.” Mrs. Yushchenko thanked the action organizers, the Passauer Neue Presse Agency and Fund to Further UNESCO Education for Children Requiring Help program, due to who German people had got a chance to help Ukrainian children.

Mrs. Yushchenko visited the room where the tomograph was installed, talked to its operators and doctors.

On behalf of the Ukraine 3000 Charitable Fund, Mrs. Yushchenko presented the AMSU Oncology Institute administration with an icon of Our Lady to be placed in the tomograph room. She also gave a set of children's books to the children's oncology.

The tomograph at the AMSU Oncology Institute has been working in test mode since early March 2007. Its total value is € 392,000.

The Ukraine 3000 Charitable Fund has been cooperating with the Oncology Institute for several years. In late 2005 the Fund, together with TNK BP Ukraine Company, donated equipment and medications for a total of one million hryvnias (roughly $200,000). In May 2006, a family rooms block was unveiled at the children's department after a renovation which had become possible due to the Ukraine 3000 Fund and McDonald’s Ukraine.
