On September 7 Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Fund Kateryna Yushchenko opened the counter-trafficking award ceremony. The ceremony took place at Ivan Franko Academic Drama Theater. It was initiated last year by the International Organization for Migration, which has been supporting Ukraine’s fight against human trafficking for many years.
The ceremony was also participated by H. M. Queen Sylvia of Sweden and her daughter, H. R. H. Princess Madeleine, who visited Kyiv on an invitation from the International Organization for Migration.
In her speech, Mrs. Yushchenko thanked Ukrainian and international organizations concerned about fighting human trafficking. She also thanked Queen Sylvia of Sweden and her World Childhood Foundation for rendering support to the victims of human trafficking and their children. Mrs. Yushchenko said that the Ukrainian and world communities should concentrate their effort on protecting children deprived of parents’ care and being raised in orphanages, since these children are often caught into the trap of sexual slavery. “Ukraine is becoming an effective center of the fight against modern slaveholders. However, a final victory over this phenomenon requires realizing and solving the whole complex of problems inciting Ukrainian women to take a step down the road of humiliation and exploitation. To stop human trafficking, it is necessary to develop economic opportunities for Ukraine’s citizens, in part, for the women. The Ukrainian women have to see prospects for obtaining high-quality education, decent job, and a chance to create a family and raise children. To this end, it is necessary to preserve and increase the importance of the family as a basis for development of the society, as its healthy basement in terms of economy, spirituality, and morals,” Ms. Yushchenko said. In the final part of her speech, Mrs. Yushchenko called upon those present to continue cooperation on both national and international level between law enforcement bodies and NGOs, and also to demand from countries, which are the biggest markets of supplying of and demand for human slaves, to do their best to decrease this demand and extirpate the very idea that basic human rights and freedoms can be violated in the twenty-first century.
Queen Sylvia of Sweden also delivered a speech at the ceremony, discussing the problems of the orphans as potential victims of human trafficking, as well as the need for developing social skills in these children and protecting their social rights. She thanked state and non-governmental organizations for their effort in the fight against human trafficking.
