First Lady meets Cherkassy residents
04 February 2006 12:27
On February 3, Kateryna Yushchenko met with residents of Cherkassy in order to discuss problems of the Cherkassy Children’s Hospital.
Its construction was started in 1988, but has not been finished yet because of insufficient funding. Cherkassy oblast is the only oblast in Ukraine that has no children’s hospital.
In 2005, the Cherkassy government asked Ukraine 3000 to accept this unfinished hospital as a member of the Hospital to Hospital Program. It is intent to improve health care for children by finding partners such as hospitals, universities, medical foundations and pharmaceutical companies for 24 children’s hospitals throughout Ukraine and create modern children’s hospitals to provide integrated medical services.
During the meeting, it was decided to establish a regional fund to complete the construction and equip the hospital. Local entrepreneurs, NGOs and charitable foundations claimed that they were ready to engage in a fund raising campaign. Ukraine 3000 will be in charge of providing hospital workers with equipment and information resources and also helping them take part in exchange programs.
In her speech, the President’s wife urged local businessmen, churches, NGOs and residents to take part in this program.
“Together, we will be able to revive Ukraine’s best traditions of charitable giving and help the children gain access to high quality medical services,” she said.
