
Croatia Commemorates Holodomor Victims
November 24, 2007, a requiem for the victims of Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine (Holodomor) took place at the Greek Catholic Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Zagreb, Croatia.
As LIHABiznesInform was told at the press service of the Embassy of Ukraine to the Republic of Croatia, Ambassador of Ukraine Markiyan Lubkivsky addressed those present at the setvice, speaking about the reasons and consequences of Holodomor and calling on the members of the Ukrainian community to work actively to promote recognition by Croatia of this great tragedy of the Ukrainian people. After the liturgy, candles were lit near Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in the memory of Holodomor victims. Requiems were also held in all places of compact residence of the Ukrainians, in part, Vukovar, Slavonski Brod, Rijeka, etc.
Croatia’s printed and electronic mass media also broadly covered the 75th anniversary of the 1932-1933 famine in Ukraine. Leading Croatian mass media publish historical facts and reasons of Holodomor, mentioning that 17 people were dying every minute in Ukraine at that time, 1,000 every hour, and 25,000 every day. In part, Vjesnik newspaper published an article informing on memorial events being held in Ukraine. Fokus published an article titled, Stalin’s Mssacre of the Ukrainian People.
As was informed earlier, today, November 24, memorial events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine (Holodomor) are held in Ukraine. A national Minute of Silence was announced at 4:00 p.m., followed by the Light a Candle all-Ukrainian action, initiated by the International Coordinating Committee of the Ukrainian World Congress. The action is also supported by Ukrainian diplomatic representations abroad and Ukrainian public organizations.
