Light a Candle Action Started in Ukraine
At 4:00 p.m., after the national Minute of Silence in the memory of Holodomor victims, the all-Ukrainian Light a Candle action started. Everyone can light a candle in the window as a symbol of paying respect to the memory of the victims of Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine (Holodomor).
President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko with his family took part in the mourning procession dedicated to the Holodomor victims, from St. Sophia’s Square to St. Michael’s Square.
Among other participants in the procession were Vice Prime Minister Dmytro Tabachnyk, Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky, political, state, and religious figures, representatives of the central executive bodies, diplomats, and survivors of the famine. Representatives of all Ukraine’s regions took part in the procession.
The Day of the Memory of Holodomor Victims is commemorated on the fourth Saturday of November.
November 28, 2007, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed a law On the Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine (Holodomor). By this act, Holodomor was recognized genocide against the Ukrainian people. At present, parliaments of 14 countries have also recognized this.
Various estimations place the Holodomor death toll at 7 to 10 million people. By historians’ calculations, over 25,000 people a day died at that time in Ukraine.
